| |
| The Place : |

| |
| The Situation : |
An influx of millions of people into West Bengal from the erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), the Partition's other child. Existing colleges in and around the city failing to meet the increased demand. |
| The Response : |
Relief and Rehabilitation departments of the Central and State governments coming together to establish five new under-graduate colleges in and around Calcutta, under the Dispersal Scheme, to create greater opportunities for higher education. |
| |
| Thus was born Gurudas College (Government Sponsored) in July, 1956, in the eastern part of the City, an area known as Narikeldanga. |

| Conclution
That is the story of our growth so far - from a rented accommodation to three blocs, 75 students to 1500, 2 whole-time teachers to 50, 162 books in the library to more than 25,000, only Pass course teaching to 3 programmes of study, 13 Honours course and 41 subject-combinations. The effort to expand and improve continues guided by the mission and goal of the college, which, other than the general transmission and generation of knowledge, are, (i) to provide students with the best possible education, (ii) to inculcate in the students the spirit of leadership, (iii) to instil in them the qualities of compassion and understanding, and (iv) to transform them from individuals to responsible citizens. |
